Village of Mala
Name of a northern population of the island belongs to the municipality of Haria, of problematic etymology. Rather than having
its origin in the Spanish adjective bad, very improper in law and sustantivarse toponomásticas to name a town, the place name should proceed or be linked to Tinamala, the highest mountain nearby, it undoubtedly Guanche origin. And yet, on the map you drew P.A. Lanzarote Castle in the eighteenth century the town is not listed, but a Punta Mala on the coast of demarcation.
If it had, the town's name might well have derived adjective coastal tip, which no "law" that would impede toponomastic adjective, so in truth.
But we think P.A. Castle was wrong in his annotation: not called Punta Mala, but Punta Mala, as shown on the map of Torriani, the first thing you do in some detail of the place names in the island in the late seventeenth century.
And in the documentation file Teguise cited seventeenth century a small "place" mala, belonging to the demarcation of Haria (Bruquetas 1997: 321), we can identify the current Mala.
Therefore, we favor an origin of the name Guanche.
Population bad right is 534 inhabitants (1 January 2010)
