The town is old, as quoted in the relations of localities on the island was the occasion of the eruptions of Timanfaya, in 1730, whether or not affected by them. But long before the town was the mountain as landmark of all sides, making it more likely that the name had first Máguez what the volcano.
According to recent research, it seems that the name comes from Magua Máguez (this word was and is used by our elders to express "shame"), is believed to have received this name in Berber invasions time, which forced the inhabitants to refuge in the Cave of the Greens.
This is a town where people always lived from agriculture, until the decade of 60-70 in which its people were abandoning their fields in search of another alternative of life, mostly in the hospitality and construction.
This period coincides with the birth of some of the resorts that were serving claim to an incipient tourism, which gradually grew and demanding services.
This changed the way of life of the people of Máguez, changing plowing waiter tray. For three decades, the field was prácticamene abandoned until recent years, when it shows a slight resurgence of the advantages of having desalinated water throughout the area, allowing irrigation.
We can say that for almost 30 years the field was only attended by older people, currently approaching the field and younger people supported mechanically in the field works.
