These salt flats seem to be not only the oldest of Lanzarote, but of whole of the Canaries,it is speculated that its construction
has been due to the Romans, before the conquest of the island by the Norman Jean de Bethencourth, although the first written documents they are talking about the fifteenth century, in times of Sancho de Herrera, First Lord of Lanzarote.Also the above salt flats are already mapped by Leonardo Torriani in 1590. Meanwhile,  Glas Gerorge in 1764, says his production served to supply not only insular but actually was sent to Tenerife and La PalmaIn the nineteenth, Pascual Madoz,  who refers to these in his dictionary, to ensure that production exceeded one million kilograms.
At the beginning of century the Salinas River came to occupy an area of ​​32 hectares. It is to be also noted that were unique to the island until 1775, which created others in Arrecife.
From this time the geography of the island coastline begins to plague of salt flats. These salt flats are located at the foot of the Acantilado de Caleta de Famara, at the so-called Gusa area, so it is also known by the name of Gusa salt flats.
