This parasite comes from America where it was cultivated since before the arrival of the Spaniards and is intruducido according
JA Sanz in Spain in 1822. A Canary arrive between 1825 and 1830.
Cochineal is not a crop actually grown is Las Tunas (Nopalea coccielifera) and in it an insect, cochineal (Coccus cacti) of the raw material for the purple dye which has many applications is obtained inscrusta.
This insect sticks to procreate and cactus every three or four months, these insects only females which when dried, the dye bags get taken advantage of. The leaves should be pruned to grow up other young and tender nopales are where cochineal well be nailed its sting.
Once the stalk has started its development, a bag (inoculation) containing this parasite colonizes the nopales snuggles. At between months is ready to collect.
