César Manrique Born in Arrecife (1919 - 1992), Lanzarote Island where his career has left
an indelible mark. After completing his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid (city where he lived between 1945 and 1960),
often his painting both inside and outside of Spain. Participates in the XXVIII and XXX Venice Biennale (1955 and 1960). and the Spanish-American Biennial of Havana (1955). In the early fifties enters non-figurative art and investigates the qualities of matter to make it the essential character of his compositions. It links well, like other Spanish painters normalista movement of those years.
Travel through various part of the world and in 1964, he moved to live in New York. Direct knowledge of American abstract expressionism, pop art, the new sculpture and kinetic art, visual culture provided a key to his creative career later. In New York, presented individually on three occasions (in 1966, 1967 and 1969) in the Catherine Viviano Gallery.
In 1966, he returned definitively to Lanzarote. On the island, which then began its tourism development, promotes a model of intervention in the territory in key sustainability which sought to safeguard the natural and cultural heritage insular model that was instrumental in the declaration of Lanzarote as a Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO in 1993.
Parallel to the commitment to the island territory, Manrique opened his creative work to other artistic manifestations. Thus developed a new aesthetic ideas, which he called arte-natural/naturaleza-arte, he could specify in its spatial interventions, a unique example of public art in Spain: Jameos del Agua, Tahíche home (now the headquarters of the foundation César Manrique), Mirador del Rio, Cactus Garden, etc..
Besides its Lanazarote interventions, devised various proposals on other islands as Martiánes in Tenerife Costa, El Mirador Palmarejo the Mirador de La Gomera or rock in the Iron. Outside of the Canary Islands Madrid intervened in mall-2 (The valley), etc.. Are interventions, essential public works, (viewpoints, alteration of the coast ...) in maintaining a respectful dialogue with the natural environment and placed in architectural values ​​of the local tradition with modern conceptions.
Grower of different languages ​​creative (painting, sculpture, urban planning, public art ....) underlies his entire artistic production is a clear desire to integrate with the natural environment. Purpose syncretic and holistic - Total Art, in his words - which made explicit in its public space designs.
A harmonization effort, ultimately, not only refers to his passion for beauty, but also for life.
